The Bailey Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition entitled Bryan Colley – A Survey, running from December 11, 2026 through January 23, 2027. The opening reception will take place on Friday, December 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm. The Bailey Art Gallery is located at 11870 SE Dixie Highway, Hobe Sound, FL 33455.

Colley began creating detailed renderings and assemblage with found objects in childhood, and never stopped. Colley’s “Introduction to Painting” professor was a great inspiration, granting him an independent study in painting for the length of his life at college. Various class projects led to new ways of seeing, and creating. Colley has exhibited his work in various galleries over the years and was recently selected to be a fellow at the prestigious Dora Maar Residency

Program in Menerbes, France. His works are in private collections throughout the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean and beyond. It is rare and exciting to find this caliber of self-study created largely outside the art-world system.

“Bryan Colley – A Survey” features paintings, assemblage and drawings starting in the 1970s continuing through today. The exhibition explores how repetition of mark-making, composition, color and form can define idiosyncratic style – and how unique experiments within that style can establish new creative pathways.

Paintings toggle between realism and abstraction. Concentric patterns emanate like mandalas while sharp, optical arrangements depict buildings from above or below. Larger-than-life subjects such as celestial phenomena like the Northern Lights exist alongside intimate, personal effects such as dish towels rendered with a caught fish. Where central lines are created with either vertical Rorshach folds or simple horizon lines, others opt for overall geometry or horror vacui – a Latin phrase meaning “fear of empty space.” Where assemblage is chock full of found objects imbued with personal meaning, other paintings simplify with static and clear images.
